Can anyone recommend me a good, not to expensive soundcard that will work with Vista. I only use on board audio and recently realised how balls it actually is. I currently have 7.1 with the onboard but never actually use the speakers to stem off wife rage at bass boom.

I can't recommend Creative. I've got a Audigy 2 ZS. And though the hardware is excellent, the driver/software support is a CATASTROPHE. If it weren't for a guy named Daniel_K, who creates custom software packs, my card would be almost useless under Windows 7 x64 (no configuration software provided). But there are issues with the drivers under 64-bit, which cause heavy distortion, expecially with headsets (constant static (audio-in) and occasional distortion when talking (audio-out)).

Thus, I'm going to buy a ASUS Xonar DX this week. Only downside is, that it has no EAX 5 support. But I've got the feeling that this feature has no future anyway.

I can share my impressions of the card in a few days if you are interested. Let me know.
