Valve Announces $25 Million Ad Campaign For Left 4 Dead 2

Posted by Mike McCarthy at 9:22 PM Oct 05, 2009
When Valve announced the development of Left 4 Dead 2 at this year's E3, fans of last year's zombie co-op shoot 'em up were polarized. Promised a number of DLC packs for the smash hit that dropped last fall, many owners of the original Left 4 Dead had worries that these downloadable campaigns would never see the light of day and that the release of a sequel just a year after the first game was nothing more than a cheap cash-in.
While some criticism was silenced by last week's Crash Course add-on, the release of a second $60 game in such close proximity to its predecessor continues to draw heat. For better or worse, it looks like the sequel is about to scare up a hell of a lot more attention.
Valve has announced a mammoth advertising onslaught for their undead epilogue, coming soon to a television set (and practically every other advertising medium) near you. Left 4 Dead 2 will be pushed at fans, haters, and neutral parties alike during Monday Night Football, UFC events, and other prime time programs - and it doesn't stop there.
As part of a $25 million ad campaign, expect to find zombies in the pages of your magazines, on the sidebars of your favorite websites, and even adorning billboards. The $25 million to be spent on the game is more than double what Valve spent on last year's title, which was backed by just $10 million in advertising.
Despite the backlash it's receiving from many fans, Left 4 Dead 2 is reportedly already the most pre-ordered title in Valve's history. With sales like that, The Orange Box developers can't be too concerned with the rage their newest title is generating from some fans (or anti-fans, as it were).
Even if some more stubborn gamers give up on the series, with the sheer amount of buzz the game is in line to receive, one has to imagine that some newcomers to the zombie hit will be bitten by the Left 4 Dead bug by the time the game hits shelves November 17th.
