1) I need to install GFWL(Games for windows live) to play some games im really, really interested in. These games are Bioshock 2 and GTA 4.
so when i try to install GFWL , this error comes up.

An error has occured while installing XliveRedist.msi

when i went into add and remove programs, i saw
microsoft games for Windows - live ,
and
microsoft games for windows - live redistributable
I tried removing both of them, but it came up with:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network source that is unavailible.
Click ok to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package.
xLiveRedist.msi in the box below.
I think this is the problem.
What i need to do is somehow make the computer stop thinking theres a GFWL. Since when im installing GFWL, its probably detecting thats its already installed, but its not, and goes crazy.

Hi,

After you've run the games for windows live (GFWL) setup, open your event viewer (start > Control panel > administrative tools > event viewer) and have a look in the application logs for the GFWL install error, pasting the full details in here will help.

There are a number of causes for this error usually caused by a old GFWL registry keys, registry key permissions issue, knackered msi installation or interference by other programs, there are a few more obscure causes I know of, but the full details of that error will let us know which one to go for biggrin.gif

very odd.. anything producing an error like that should put something in the event logs, nevermind guess we have to do it the hard way. To begin with looking at that installer error regarding network source being unavailable, will try and make it available:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type gpedit.msc
Click the plus sign next to Local Computer Policy object then the plus sign next to Computer Configuration to expand the view.
Expand Administrative Templates.
In the right pane, Expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer
Double-click the "Enable user to browse for source while elevated policy" setting.
Click Enabled and ok
Double-click the "Enable user to use media source while elevated policy" setting.
Click Enabled and ok.

Rerun the uninstaller as before. When it comes up with the "network source that is unavailible" message, locate (search if need by) the xLiveRedist.msi file and press ok.

Failing that, I'd have a look at downloading the microsoft install cleanup utility (http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe) - be careful only to remove GFWL tongue.gif

I love you monkeyfiend.
Im not sure what the first bit did, but the windows uninstaller thing helped. I installed GFWL succesfully. Now to see if GTA4 works good enough...
